Building More Than Schools: How REACH Transforms Teens into Global Changemakers

In a small village in Guatemala’s Quiché region, laughter and the sound of hammers filled the air. Side by side with local community members, a group of U.S. teens wasn’t just building a classroom, they were building bridges of understanding, empathy, and leadership.
Education changes everything.
In rural, Indigenous Guatemalan communities, children face systemic barriers to learning—long distances to the nearest school, unsafe conditions, and widespread discrimination. Through IAPW’s REACH program, we bring hope and opportunity by building classrooms and providing the resources communities need to thrive.
But REACH isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about transforming young lives on both sides of the classroom door. Each year, our Youth Ambassadors travel to Guatemala to participate in immersive service-learning trips. They mix concrete, paint walls, and play with local children—but the true transformation happens inside.

“I thought I was going to Guatemala to give,” says Halo, “but I came home with a heart full of gratitude.”

Through REACH, teens gain empathy, leadership, and a sense of global responsibility. They return home inspired to take action—whether it’s advocating for education equity, volunteering in their own communities, or launching youth-led initiatives. Meanwhile, the children they serve gain the most fundamental gift of all: access to a safe, nurturing classroom and a brighter future.
Every school built is more than a building—it’s a bridge between worlds. Through REACH, we’re raising a generation of leaders who understand that when one child rises, we all rise.
